Spark Websites Enhanced with Section 508 Compliance
(Greenville, SC: September 20, 2009) Mediasation, a Greenville-based web development firm, is pleased to announce that Spark Websites have undergone significant enhancements to meet Section 508 Accessibility Guidelines.

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is intended to standardize the accessibility of information technology. To meet Section 508 guidelines, websites need to be accessible to individuals with disabilities, such as visual impairment. While Section 508 standards apply specifically to Federal agency websites, they provide a benchmark for the private sector as accessibility concerns continue to gain prominence.

Recently, major corporations have faced legal action because of a failure to meet website accessibility requirements. The most widely-recognized case, a class action lawsuit regarding accessibility limitations on Target.com, was settled in 2007. As part of the settlement, Target agreed to make the website comply with accessibility standards and pay up to $6 million in damages.

Section 508 compliant websites include features such as proper tagging for screen readers, alternative navigation options, and substitutions for rich media files. Spark Websites meet the guidelines outlined in Section 508, and Mediasation offers optional training sessions to help clients maintain the website's compliance after launch.

"By meeting Section 508 guidelines, Spark Websites help businesses address the needs of a wider audience and comply with standard accessibility guidelines," says Nate Hanna, Mediasation's senior interactive designer and lead developer on the project. "This can be a key differentiator for businesses online."
